Kia ora Spreydon Whānau,

It has been a very busy and vibrant few weeks at Te Kura o Mōkihi!
From the magic of Book Week and our colourful Book Character Dress Up Day to the energy of the PTA Disco, Pizza Lunch and House of Science experiments, our school has been buzzing with the range of activities and events.

Today at our Assembly we were able to celebrate our School Birthday and bring out the ceremonial sword to cut the cake. I'm sure each year the cake gets smaller or the sword looks bigger! Happy 154 years to our school community.
Our tamariki are excited that the present given to the school was a vibrant new mat for our library! There were a number of students wanting to try it out this afternoon during Spirit of Spreydon time.

Our tamariki have also been showing fantastic enthusiasm and drive in academic, problem solving and the Arts. From tackling the Times Tables Rock Stars challenge in Team Mōkihi, to our two teams representing us proudly in the EPro8 interschool challenge held at Hillmorton, along with science experiments and preparations for our upcoming School Production.

Alongside all of this excitement, we know that a number of our families and staff have been battling some particularly nasty winter bugs. It is always tough when those winter viruses start circulating; we hope everyone is resting and recovering well.

A reminder that on Monday the 24th of August we have our Staff Only day focusing on Mathematics and delving deeper into best practice. We appreciate you finding alternative care for your child on this day.

We are hopeful that we get a few more rays of sunshine to help dry out our field and get back to having more space to enjoy the fresh air at break times.

Ngā mihi nui,

Andrea and the Spreydon Team
Welcome to Suad and Eleen who have joined Team Mōkihi and to Atlas, Hudson, Maisie, Evoleht, Rey and Luna who have started in Pūhara and Jah who has joined Team Paretai this term.

As part of our on going requirement to monitor and report on our student attendance, we are sharing our Term 2 data.
As a school in 2026, our Term 2 data shows a clear decrease of chronic absences and an increase in our amount of regular attendance by 5% from Term 2, 2025.

The positive impact that we are noticing is that there is a continual increase in the amount of students arriving to school on time. We are now reaching 92% of our students achieving this 90% of the time.
This does have a huge impact on our Homerooms and tamariki being able to complete morning tasks and connect with their teacher and peers and set up for a successful day.
A reminder that Monday 24th August is a Staff Only Day. We thank you in advance for finding alternative care for your child.

Book Character Dress Up Day

A huge thank you to everyone who supported and got involved in our Book Week celebrations!

It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our library development and focus on the joy of reading across the whole school.

Our Book Character Parade was a true highlight. Our court area was filled with so much laughter, smiles, high fives, positive comments, and double ups!

It was wonderful to see all the amazing costumes come to life, from Minions and Cats in the Hat to so many clever, creative homemade outfits.

A very special thanks to the Library team and to Wendy from the Christchurch City Council Library Outreach programme, who delighted our tamariki by visiting as Elmer the Elephant and generously supplying some fantastic spot prizes!

We would also like to thank our students and staff for fully embracing the spirit of the day with such imaginative and spirited effort, and to our Senior Leaders and Literacy Support teachers who visited homerooms across the school to share their favourite books, stories, and authors with our tamariki.
Throughout the week, we also enjoyed exploring the incredible line up of finalists in the <!-->2026 NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults Shortlist-->.
We are so excited to hear who takes home the official awards this year!

How can you help keep the joy of reading alive ?

Read with or to your child for 10 -15 minutes a day.

Why?

Reading for pleasure has been shown to impact all 4 dimensions of health. It improves:
  • physical, mental and emotional wellbeing — reduces stress and builds self-esteem, life satisfaction and curiosity
  • social and spiritual wellbeing — builds empathy, connection and a greater understanding of self and others.
Why not try the Hell's reading challenge wheel. Pick up your reading wheel at your nearest Library.

Celebrating success

Congratulations to our two EPro8 Teams The Sprockets and Techies who competed at the EPro8 interschool challenge last week at Hillmorton High School.
Our two Year 5 and 6 teams were up against 10 other teams from five schools from across Christchurch.
The Spreydon Sporkets were placed 1st and The Spreydon Techies were placed 4th.

Here is their report.

EPro8 was very cool and it was fun learning about all the electronics and how to connect them all together.
At times we struggled, but soon found a solution. There were two teams from Spreydon that participated in the Inter-School Challenge and both teams qualified for the Semi-Finals in 2 weeks.
The scores were extremely close with 235 points for 1st and 230 for 2nd.
This year there were some very cool activities you could do, there was a Super Mario cart that could shoot out banana peels, there was also a scissor lift that moved up and down, there were two more builds that you could make that were also very cool to build.
Both the teams had an amazing time and are super excited for the Semi-Finals!

Office Update

Thank you for your support by coming to the office to arrange collection of tamariki throughout the day.
A reminder our uniform supplier is NZ Uniforms They are located at 455 Blenheim Road.
However, we do have some Second Hand uniform available for purchase from the Office. In Term 4, Sunhats will be available to be purchased from the School Office.

Caught Growing our Heart

Tamariki are nominated across our school when they are seen to be growing our school heart by Staff or recognised by the public.
From our Caretaking team through to our Admin team and those messages that are passed on by our community.
The nominations are for tamariki that are noticed acting out our values even when they don't think anyone is watching.
It could be for looking after school property, supporting other students, a random act of kindness to others or offering to do tasks without reward.

Congratulations goes to:
Eli, Thomas, Nathan, Oscar, Taigh, Gevannah and Finn.
These tamariki enjoyed a cookie in the Staffroom with Mrs Stewart.
