Kia ora Spreydon Whānau,
It's so nice to see everyone back all ready for a new term.
Last term, while it was short, it was action packed!
We focused on establishing routines and partnerships. It was great to end the term with so many whānau taking up the opportunity to attend our literacy hui and celebrate the learning taking place in our Homerooms.
Over the term break our grounds have had a bit of an upgrade in places. Due to the Property Top up Grant that was provided to all schools we were able to focus on the Mathers Road Car park turning area. For safety reasons we used much of the top up grant to level the landscaping and bring in some much needed visibility for drivers and our tamariki. We were also able to complete the landscaping around our new building and remove an aging Silver birch tree and stumps near our boundary fence.
Pūhara 1 also had some carpet installed in their outdoor space and our sandpit cover was repaired and we have 3 automated doors within the Mokihi and Pitau spaces. These have been very exciting for our tamariki to navigate this week.
We have also had some work done within our classroom spaces with a new whiteboard for Puhara 1 and some shelving units relocated out of the office area now that we are not needing so much space to store our school uniform supplies.
Mrs Clements is enjoying having some art work on the Office walls.
The PTA are continuing to work towards their goal of a scooter track in 2026. With two grant applications being successful along with the support of the fundraising opportunities over the last few years, the PTA is now able to start the process of finalising the track design and start to make it happen!!
HOW AMAZING for our tamariki and community!
We can look forward to fundraising to complete the project in 2026!
It is a huge achievement for a very small but mighty group of dedicated whanau and all of our community who have rallied around, supporting the fundraising ventures.
The PTA have their next meeting on Wednesday 29th April at 3pm in Puhara 2. It is an exciting time to be part of this group. All are welcome to come and support our PTA.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in our Cross Country and Fun run. We really appreciated the whanau encouragement and support of all of our tamariki who took part.
While the weather wasn't as sunny as we hoped, it provided a true cross country experience.
Thanks to Mrs Emily Davidsen and Miss Mel Grant and our House Leaders and Ambassadors who worked so hard prior to and during the event to make sure it was well run and making sure all of our runners had a course that they knew well and were able to try for their personal best and have fun.
We are very thankful to Horomaka Hillmorton who allowed us to use their field to extend our course for our Mokihi Team.
Good luck to our Year 5 and 6 team of Ashleigh, Melaena, Eleanor, Ijay, Hugo, Finn, Paige, Poppy, Kenzie, Mason, Conor and David who will be representing our School at the South West Zones on Thursday 21st May at Ngā Puna Wai.

We have received our Term 1 provisional attendance data from the Ministry of Education and
while our target was not met, we did have a significant improvement that is worth celebrating.
91% of our students are arriving regularly on time to start the day.
Last year while we also had 76% of our student having good attendance. Only 72% of our students were arriving regularly on time to start the day.
Thank you to our whanau for making sure routines are in place to make sure your child starts the day with connections with their peers and teacher before school begins.
While many have found the sharing our information quite confronting. As a school we are tasked with sharing the reality of your child's attendance data in it's raw form. This is the number of days absent.
Last term we had quite a run of illness, this was not expected so early in the year for so many of our tamariki and whanau.
We also had a significant number of students absent due to holidays during term time that is very hard to make up when illness is prevalent.
Your child's educational journey is a partnership. We know that routines and consistency makes a difference for our tamariki. Arriving late is hard for all tamariki, the child that is late, the peers who didn't have a chance to connect and the teacher and class who have already started their school day when a child arrives late. Due to the age of our students, lateness has to fall with parents to manage. This is your part of the partnership.
Thank you for prioritising this for your child, their peers and their teacher.
Having a break from routine for a holiday during term time or a few days at home for a range of reasons other than illness can also be a challenge to re-engage.
If there are challenges to attendance, please contact your child's homeroom teacher in the first instance. They cannot support your child if they do not know if there are things that are of concern. Setting up a plan of support is often a next step where each hold a collective responsibility to reduce barriers within the home and school setting.
A reminder of our Attendance Management Plan from a whānau perspective:
If your child is away - please make contact with the school prior to 9am via the school office - text, email or phone.
If you are scheduling a holiday - please complete a leave form so that we can put these dates in advance of your child's absences.
If there are barriers to your child's attendance, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.
If you receive a phone call or letter advising of your child's level of attendance, remember that schools are now mandated to advise of the days absent no matter the reasons within the term.
