Kia ora Spreydon Whānau,
We know we are well into Autumn when we have so many leaves covering our grounds. We are very lucky to see the shift in seasons first hand, especially the joy on our tamariki's faces as they play in and around all the gold and orange leaves. We do hope the weather stays warm and dry so that Mr Hyland gets a chance to scoop up all the leaves before the rain and wind get to them.
Just by walking through our learning spaces you can see how engaged our tamariki are about their Antarctica focus this term and the science experiences that come from delving into this focus. This is great to see.
A reminder you are welcome to pop into learning hubs and see the amazing art and Inquiry topics linked into our term focus.
Next week, Friday 15th May our Hauora Council are encouraging us all to end the week by celebrating difference with Pink Shirt Day. Tamariki are welcome to come dressed either in Pink or bright colours. This is a non uniform day.
Assessment and Reporting
In Term 2 we focus on celebrating progress and achievement of our tamariki as they reach the mid point of the school year. Our report format is currently with the designers to tweak what we do to align with the new language of reporting requirements. Rest assured our reports will still cover core curriculum areas and next steps on how to help at home. Tamariki will also share how they feel about their learning and your child's report will share attendance details. These written reports will come home on Monday 29th June.
In week 11, Wednesday 1st July and Thursday 2nd July our whanau conferences will take place. This is where whanau are asked to attend with their child to celebrate learning successes and focus on next steps. How to book a time will be sent out later this term.
Extra Curricular Activities
With many tamariki starting their winter sport season - we wish all of our tamariki and their teams all the very best for the season ahead.
Our Year 5 and 6 School Basketball teams have had their first games this week and our Netball team are eager to have their first game of the season. We hope you have a great season. Thanks to the coaches and managers for support these teams. We couldn't do it without you.
We do enjoy sharing successes of our tamariki outside of the school, please feel free to email admin@spreydon.school.nz if you wish for our school community to acknowledge your child's success in our newsletter.
Mother's Day
To all of our Mothers within our school community - we wish you all a happy Mother's Day this Sunday.

Last week some Mitre 10 staff came to our school to help us to improve our garden. They kindly donated lots of gardening equipment including gloves, pea straw, compost, gardening tools and watering cans. They also donated wood and helped put together edging for our 13 trees in our school orchard.
Ruby Blue said “It was very fun, and I loved putting the boxes around the orchard plants”.
“My favourite part was learning how to use the drill” said Blake.
"I enjoyed helping Mitre 10 with the edging and hammering the pegs in" said Brody.
Thanks Mitre 10! We really appreciate you supporting your local community and our Kura. We learnt lots of new skills to help our friends and family.

Team Paretai explorers have dived deep into the frozen worlds of the Arctic and Antarctica, discovering why polar bears and penguins never actually meet and testing out how blubber keeps animals toasty in freezing waters. Using our House of Science kits, we’ve been busy experimenting with ice and even pretending to be giant whales filtering for tiny krill. When we aren't busy in the polar regions, we’ve been outside with our visiting university students, who have been teaching us fundamental skills through football matches and plenty of throwing and catching practice.

Team Mōkihi have enjoyed getting started this term with an Antarctica focus! Homerooms will take turns completing full Science days and exploring concepts relevant to Antarctica. We have also begun our whole school story about Pedro the Emperor Penguin, and will be spending time with our buddy classes to complete activities around this.

Attendance - How are we going?
We have started this term really positively with high levels of attendance.
95% of our students are attending regularly and have had less than 5 days of absences this term.
In Term 2 we know it gets harder in the winter months with sicknesses but don’t let wet days keep your children home.

Our lost property bin is starting to have a build up of no named sweatshirts that we would love to reconnect with their owners. If you are missing an unnamed sweatshirt , you will find our lost property bin in the Office entrance.

“How to Turn Your Kids Bad Day into a Good Day”.
Sometimes our kids get stuck in a funk, and no matter how hard we try, they seem determined to have a bad day! But here’s a simple way to help turn things around.
If we can teach our children from a young age that, no matter what happens, they always have the power to choose their response, we’re setting them up for lifelong resilience and stronger mental health.
Learning that we are responsible for how we navigate life is one of the most valuable lessons we can give them.
Viktor E. Frankl captured this idea beautifully in Man’s Search for Meaning:" Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way."
Helping our kids understand this now will empower them to face life’s challenges with strength, grace, and confidence.
