Kia ora Spreydon Whānau,

Week Two has been a week of opportunities to come together as a community to celebrate and thank the many hands that have helped make events happen at our school, from the Scooter track development to the school disco tonight.

At our scooter track opening on Monday we were able to thank the members within our school and wider community for their support.
A huge thank went to Graded Earth for designing and creating such an incredible track for us to ride on!

We also gave a massive thank you to our generous grant funders, The New Zealand Charitable Trust and Pub Charity. They saw just how much this track would mean to our school community and helped make it possible!

And of course, we said a HUGE shout out to our incredible PTA! Past and present members have all worked so hard to bring this wish list item to life.
For all the ways they fundraised to make this happen:
  • Everyone ordering those delicious Hillyers pies! 🥧
  • All the tasty treats baked and brought for our PTA bake sales! Those refreshing ice blocks on Fridays! 🧊
  • And who could forget the awesome Pizza lunches! 🍕
We know that it will be a real asset to our school and community and will be well looked after.
Attached below are the rules for our track and the times during the day for year groups.

To keep everyone safe, please ensure you are on site with your children after school if they are staying to use the scooter track. Unsupervised students must head directly home after they are released from their Homerooms.

We have some very excited children looking forward to attending our school disco this evening. A reminder that students who bring cellphones will be asked to place them in the Office to be kept secure until the end of the disco.
Students must arrive and leave with a member of their whānau.
There are no door sales. This event is for current Spreydon school students only and siblings under the age of 5 with parents attending.

Upcoming Events:
South West Cluster - Supporting tamariki and whānau - Autism and ADHD Discussions Monday 3rd August - don't forget to register today!

Book Character Dress Up Day

Next Thursday we are looking forward to seeing all of our favourite book characters come to life.
This weekend is a great time to finalise those book characters and get ready for a fun day of celebrating our Library and the joy this space brings to our school.

We are excited that Wendy from the Christchurch City Council Library Outreach programme will be joining us for the day of festivities.

Office Update

Many of our families who have visited the school office this term will have noticed that Mrs Clements is less mobile while her foot is strapped.

To support Kelly, we have pulled out the training manual and started using our office intercom system . For early pick ups or urgent messages, the office team will now page across the school for students to come to the office.
For those that are arriving after 2.50pm wanting to collect students, we will ask that whānau wait at the classroom along with other whānau until the end of the school day.

Reminder: ALL visitors, including parents dropping off and collecting children early must come to the Office to sign them out. We have noticed an increase of parents going directly to classrooms to drop off or collect students. From next week, parents will be asked to first go to the office to sign them out while they are paged to come to the office.

We appreciate your support in following our school procedures.

Celebrating success

Paige did an amazing performance at the NZCAF Christchurch Regional Competition in the weekend - coming away with 1st place in the Sport Aerobics Novice Individual Primary 3 - 4 Division, she will be heading to Dunedin in September to compete in the National Competition.

Congratulations to our two Basketball teams who represented Spreydon School at the South West Zones tournament last week.
There were some tough games, but all of our tamariki played well and supported each other.
Thank you to Jarden and Hayley who coached along with many supporters on the day.

We are thrilled for Miss Mel Grant and her partner Dan who got engaged during the term break.
We were excited that Mrs Chole Lenko and Beckett popped in this week to see everyone. It was lovely to see them both.

At our Board meeting earlier this week, Ms Beccy Warwick stepped away from the Co-presiding Member role, and Raukura Beattie will now continue on as our Presiding Member.

We are very fortunate as a school community that Beccy will continue to serve as part of our Spreydon School Board.
This seamless transition of leadership is a true testament to how Beccy has approached her tenure as Presiding Member since taking on the role in 2022. She ensured that thoughtful succession planning was a priority, inviting Raukura to join her as Co-presiding Member for 2026 to guarantee a smooth and supportive passing of the baton.

Beccy has been a steadfast advocate for our school while we faced many changes and challenges in the educational landscape.
Her calm manner and the care she has shown to our students, staff, and community have been deeply valued by us all. We are very grateful that she continues to contribute her skills and strengths to our Spreydon School community.

Reminder about our Hoon Hay Entrance Vehicle Access

A reminder regarding student safety at our Hoon Hay entrance:

Parent vehicles are not permitted to use this entrance before 9:15 am and after 2:30 pm. These times overlap with our Road Patrol duty, and vehicle traffic using this space for pick ups and drop offs puts our student road patrollers and pedestrians at risk.

Although we aim to keep the gates locked during these busy windows, an open gate is never an invitation to enter.
Our main entrance for vehicle drop off and pick ups is Mather's Road.

Thank you for working with us to put student safety above convenience.
At our assembly today we introduced a "Caught Growing our Spreydon Heart"
Tamariki are nominated across our school when they are seen to be growing our heart by Spreydon Staff. From our Caretaking team through to our Admin team. These are all things that are done by tamariki when they don't think anyone is watching.
It could be for picking up rubbish, looking after school property, supporting a student who has fallen over or is hurt, a random act of kindness to others or offering to do tasks without reward.

This week our first recipients visited the staffroom after assembly and had a biscuit and watched some Commonwealth games highlights with Mrs Stewart.

Congratulations to:
Mason, Denholm, Vivian, Brodie, Ella and Lilly.
