Kia ora Spreydon Whānau,

A huge thank you to everyone who got behind and supported our Wacky Thursday yesterday. Whether it was crazy hair, or fun accessories, it was fantastic to see so much creativity and spirit across the school.
We truly appreciate your support in making these days so memorable for our tamariki.

Thanks once again to our amazing PTA for organising our PTA Pizza Lunch today. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the tasty lunch, especially knowing that every slice helps supports our new scooter track.

Spring has sprung in our school orchard with some beautiful blossom on our trees. They are certainly loving the care and attention they get from our compost kids.
Below you will see a request from our compost kids for any seeds or seedlings for their spring plantings.

Next week we are excited to be celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Our Matariki leaders are looking forward to being our secret spies, keeping an eye out for kaitiaki—guardians of our school who are showing our school values: we care, we share, we learn, and fly the Tino Rangatiratanga flag

As our school prepares for our performance of The Great Southern Spark, we want to take a moment to acknowledge all of the behind-the-scenes work to get us to performance ready! A big thank you to our leads for learning their lines and stage presence, they have been wonderfully supported and encouraged by Mrs Kashizuka and Mrs Davidsen.

We also extend a special thanks to our talented Mrs Strong for bringing the props and staging to life. To our Homerooms for working hard on their performances. We can't wait for you all to see our performance come alive!
A reminder for our dress rehearsal we do ask that children bring in their chosen clothing to school in a named supermarket paper or reusable bag by Tuesday 22nd September.

Ngā mihi nui,
Andrea and the Spreydon Team

Our Kapa Haka ropū completed their first out of school performance last Friday at Halswell School for the South West Zone Cultural Celebration.

The group did an amazing job and made Te Kura o Mōkihi proud!

We are now working towards Hoon Hay Fiesta and Tūhono in November.

Here is some feedback from our 2026 Kapa Haka ropū about their experience and their why!

We should keep doing Kapa Haka so more kids know Māori. If they don't know it is a good thing to learn. The 2025 kids in the group can help the new kids.

You can be loud and you can show your appreciation to the teachers.

I can sing loud and I like performing in front of others to show them what I've got. I'm proud because it is Māori culture. Last year my brother only wanted to do Kapa Haka because of the fish and chips (end of year celebration) but I still like it even if we didn't get fish and chips.

I love doing Kapa Haka because you can learn new songs and actions and learn stuff you didn't even know about.

I think it is good that we have Māori culture and it is a good way to show people that Māori culture is important in NZ.

Every day at school matters. Regular attendance gives students the best opportunity to
learn, make progress, build relationships and be part of the Spreydon school community.
We understand that genuine illness and significant family circumstances can affect attendance.
However, where absence is avoidable, we need our students here, learning and participating.

What does our attendance look like this week:
Monday 89.1% attendance
Tuesday 92.2% attendance
Wednesday 91.5% attendance
Thursday 92.2% attendance
Friday 91.6% attendance

# Spreydon School rocks

The Spreydon Matariki leaders have been busy painting rocks! We came up with this idea during our leadership meeting when brainstorming what we could do around our school. Along with painting rocks with positive messages, we have also asked if our Kapa Haka group can go on a trip to visit another school.
We don't want to spoil the surprises by telling you everything we are planning this year, but we hope you will love what we have coming up.
Our next activity will be sharing information and supporting Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, which runs from September 14th to 20th.

Caught Growing our Heart

Tamariki are nominated across our school when they are seen to be growing our school heart by Staff or recognised by the public.
From our Caretaking team through to our Admin team and those messages that are passed on by our community.
The nominations are for tamariki that are noticed acting out our values even when they don't think anyone is watching.
It could be for looking after school property, supporting other students, a random act of kindness to others or offering to do tasks without reward.

Congratulations goes to: Oliver, Carter, Maydene, Aethel, Ayaan, Rihari, Joshua, Amelia

These tamariki enjoyed a cookie in the Staffroom with Mrs Stewart and shared some ideas of how we can support our students in our school.
A recent trip to Dunedin for the Composers Association of New Zealand annual workshop.

Enjoying participating in the Microscore concert, writing a piece of music "Crazy Clarinet" for performer Estella Wallace.
Attached is a picture of a musical score, Estella on stage with our young composer, bowing following the performance, and a group photo of the attending performers and composers. Being the youngest composer who has participated in one of these workshops meant learning a lot from the performer and from the process of writing, rehearsing and premiering a new creative work.
