A - Z
Please refer here for a quick A-Z of our School. You are always welcome to contact our school office if you have any specific questions that have not been answered through our enrolment process or through our day to day communication.
A
Absences
If your child is going to be away from school please try to phone, text or send an alert via the School Apps before 9:00am. If your child is away and we have not heard from you by then, the school will phone to find the reason for the absence. This will help ensure the welfare and safety of children. Late children must always report to the office and sign in on arrival.
Accidents
Although every reasonable precaution is exercised, accidents do happen. Minor ones receive first-aid treatment. In all cases of head injury, suspected bone injury, bad cuts, etc. the parent is notified immediately for the necessary medical attention to be sought. In the event of your child being involved in a serious accident the school will take appropriate action and will contact you as soon as possible. Please make sure we always have your current contact details.
With shared care arrangements, we contact the parent, often when asking the child who they are with on the day.
Accounts
During the course of the year parents are only asked to pay for a small number of activities such as Year 5 & 6 camp or optional activities such as sports teams (e.g. basketball, touch rugby). To ensure we can keep costs low for everyone, it is important that all accounts are paid promptly and in full. Please pay online or by EFTPOS at the office.
PTA Pizza lunches need to be cash and handed in with the form
Sushi Lunch can be paid in cash or via Eftpos at the Office.
After School
Children must leave the school grounds as soon as they are dismissed from class unless accompanied by their parent when they play in the playground. Scooters/skateboards etc are not to be used in the grounds until after road patrol is concluded. There is a a before and after school care facility operating on site. Details are in our website and at the Office.
Arrival Times
Students should be at school before the bell rings at 9.00am. Children must not be at school before 8.30am. If on the rare occasion arriving early is unavoidable children must wait outside the hall. They are not allowed on the playgrounds or in the classrooms. Staff at Spreydon School are not responsible for anyone arriving before 8.30am.
Assemblies
A full school assembly is held fortnightly on a Friday at 9.15am in the school hall. Parents are welcome to attend. The dates for assemblies are published in the school newsletter.
Assessment
Teachers are constantly monitoring and assessing children’s progress both formally and informally and the results of these assessments are used to inform planning and further learning. We use a wide range of tools available to schools. Learning progress and achievement is shared with whānau twice yearly. Reporting covers all areas of the curriculum with a focus on Literacy and Numeracy against the New Zealand Curriculum. Please talk to your child’s teacher for more information.
Attendance
It is a requirement that all children attend a school from the age of 6.
Once enrolled, children are expected to attend every day. Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear early in a child’s school career. Our aim is to have tamariki in school to learn every day they can be. There will always be times when children are absent for extended periods for family reasons but outside these times it is important for learning that children attend school regularly. Please remember to report your child as absent if they are going to be away from school.

School Holidays: 7:00am – 6:00pm (weekdays during school holidays)
Behaviour Management
While we do not have a long list of school rules we expect children to maintain acceptable standards of behaviour. Our expectations are built around our school values. We hope we can count on the support of whanau to help ensure that these expectations are supported.
We expect all our school whānau to show our School Values when at school. We aim to promote positive behaviour and to create an inclusive learning environment that will foster well-being and achievement for everyone.
We utilise restorative approaches to improve behaviour and partnerships by moving away from a blame and retribution model of dealing with negative behaviour, towards one which is based on a child’s increasing knowledge of social responsibility and self awareness.
At the class, team and school level, systems are developed that reward appropriate actions and provide for steps to deal with inappropriate behaviour. These steps will involve working alongside whànau.
Bell Times
The morning bell rings at 9.00am. The bell at the end of first break rings at 11.00am. The bell to end kia time is at 12.30pm and the end of the second break rings at 1.50pm.
9.00am Learning Time

Bikes / Scooters
Children must wear a helmet while riding any wheels at school.
Bikes and scooters should be locked at the bike/scooter racks near the Mathers Road entrance. Skates and Skateboards can be stored in the Office foyer.
Birthday Treats
Often on birthdays families ask if they can bring in treats for their child’s class. Due to allergies and that not every child is in a position to do this we discourage birthday treats.
Book Club
Scholastic Book Club brochures come home twice per term. Any purchases you wish to make can be made online or at the school office. A small percentage of each purchase comes back to the school to use on resources or books for our library.
Bullying
The school takes a pro-active approach to what can be a real problem in schools, teaching strategies and skills to deal with difficulties. If children feel they have a problem they are encouraged to talk with a teacher. If a parent becomes aware of any issue, we ask that they speak to their child’s teacher as soon as possible.
BYOD
Spreydon School is NOT a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) school. Chromebooks and Ipads are provided by the school and children are required to complete a Student Internet Agreement to use these.
C
Camp
Each year our year 5 and 6 students attend school camp for 2 nights/three days. This is usually held in term 1. There is a cost for camp. Whanau are advised of this in term 4 the previous year so they can set up payment plans if required.
Camp is a fantastic opportunity for all tamariki to try out a range of activities and practise their leadership and teamwork skills. It is expected that all Year 5 & 6 students will attend as it is seen as a valued programme by teachers, parents, students and the BOT, who receive an annual report. Leading up to camp, much of the syndicate and classroom work is based around preparing for our camp experience.
Cell Phones
Where possible, phones and phone-capable watches should not be brought to school. If they must be, they are to be handed into the office before school. Students collect them at the end of the day. The school will take all reasonable care but it needs to be clear that children bring these to school at their own risk. If whānau need to communicate with their child during the school day, they should do so through the school office. Students are not permitted to call their whānau on their phones during the school day.
Concerns/Complaints/Compliments
Our Concerns Pathway
There may be times when you have a query, compliment or concern about your child. If parents/caregivers have concerns about aspects of their child’s learning or behaviour, they should contact the School and make an appointment with the class teacher. This can be done by seeing the teacher to make an appointment or via admin@spreydon.school.nz
Early intervention or awareness can make things much easier for all concerned. We also will contact whanau when we have a concern or compliment.
Open communication is a priority – we encourage whanau to please, come talk with us.
Our Concerns Pathway is important to follow as you will generally be speaking to the person who has the most information and knowledge about your child and others in your child’s environments. We will do our best to work together for manageable solutions.
Communication
We communicate with whanau in a number of ways. Our fortnightly newsletter is available via our school app or website link. Learning Teams send out a newsletter at the beginning of each term. The office will from time to time send out a notice via school app and text alert.
To download our App, head to the Apple App Store or Android Google Play Store and search for School Apps. Once downloaded subscribe to Spreydon School.
You are welcome to share the App with any Whānau members who may need to be in connection with the school.
Once you have the app on your phone you will need to subscribe to the Alert Groups that are appropriate for your child(ren). To do this, open the app, click on the Alerts icon in the bottom right of the home screen and click on the tick icon in the top right hand corner. From the drop down options deselect any alert groups that are no longer needed and select your child(ren)’s class and learning team for the current year.
PLEASE NOTE: You will need to select both groups to receive alerts for both the class and the team.
Please contact the school office or your child’s teacher if you require support with this.
Composite classes
Composite classes are when classes have more than one Year level in them. Sometimes there are concerns about this and these usually relate to a perception that if a child is placed in a composite class the child may be disadvantaged; perhaps that work will be too easy, or that they will be repeating work from a previous year etc. Be assured programmes and learning themes for each classroom are planned annually. There is no set requirement for curriculum coverage for children of a certain age. The only requirement of schools, by the Ministry of Education, is to ensure there is breadth and depth of coverage of all of the essential learning areas and that the Homeroom teacher delivers a programme at an appropriate level of instruction that caters for the individual differences in levels of thinking and learning.
Cycle Safety
Cycle safety is a programme run by the Christchurch City Council for Students in Year 6. This programme is undertaken yearly.
Cycling to School
Whanau are urged to ensure that children are not only proficient cyclists but that they also have an adequate understanding of basic road rules before allowing them to ride or scoot to school. It is compulsory for all children to wear an approved type helmet when cycling or scooting to, from and while at school.
D
Dental Service
The Mobile Dental Bus visits the school, or via Community Dental Service (0800 846 983)
E
Education Outside the Classroom
Special Activities
All year groups have opportunities for trips and outings throughout the year. We strongly urge whanau to support these activities which are always memorable events in a child’s time at school. Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) experiences (e.g. camps, trips) are an important aspect of our school curriculum. These experiences allow for our learners to challenge their mindsets and to grow in confidence and self esteem.
Our school has an EOTC policy and Risk Management Guidelines are followed by all staff when planning trips. All EOTC activities will be clearly communicated with you and at times we may require your assistance in terms of whanau help and transport. Permission for all trips and camps that are not walking distance from school will have permission requested via our school notices.
Emergencies
In the event of a major earthquake or other civil emergency, children will be held at school until collected by a parent or other adult authorised to collect them or until other instructions have been given by Civil Defence authorities. As part of our procedures for such an event, we ask that you ensure the office has contact details for up to three adults authorised to collect your child.
Children are given instruction at school on what to do in the event of an earthquake or fire and these procedures are practised from time to time.
All messages following our emergency management plan will be displayed on our school website.
Essentials to Bring
Students should bring to school each day:
- Reading folder
- Morning tea – including fruit
- Water bottle
- Sunhat (Term 1 and 4) and sunscreen
- Medication if required (should be held at office)
- Change of clothes (for younger students or those who love to play in puddles)
Please ensure all your child’s things e.g. uniform they wear, jackets, hats, shoes and change of clothes are named.
Please do NOT bring mobile phones, sweets or sugary drinks, toys and valuable items.
F
Facebook
We have a public Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/spreydon.school.nz for general news.
Family Events
From time to time we have sporting events where whanau are invited to come along to support. We encourage parents to dress up in their child’s House colours. Periodically we arrange school picnics or BBQs as social events for the school. These are timed to allow parents to come along after work and are an opportunity for the school community to meet informally.
H
Hats
Navy blue bucket hats are required to be worn in Term 1 and Term 4.
If your child does not have a hat they are required to sit in the shade at break times. No hat, no play, no fun today. These can be purchased from our school office.
Head lice
From time to time there are outbreaks of headlice. Please don’t panic if your child has head lice – they are very easily caught and very easily treated. Please inform us if you discover signs of head lice in your child’s hair – chances are others may have them too. Generally, the school sends a note home to all families in a class to alert them to the presence of head lice. The school has some treatments available by contacting the office.
Healthy Eating
We are a water only School. Water is brain juice, so we like students to make sure they bring and drink lots of water. Please don’t bring fizzy drinks or sugary drinks to school. Lollies are also not usually allowed.
Holidays in term time
We understand that families may sometimes choose to take holidays during the school term. Under the Ministry of Education’s criteria, holidays taken during term time are classified as unjustified absences, except in special or exceptional circumstances.
What to Do if You Are Planning a Term Time Holiday
If you are planning to take your child out of school for a holiday during the term:
- Please notify the school in advance, including the dates your child will be away. This includes filling in a leave form.
- Be aware that this will be recorded as an unjustified absence, in line with Ministry of Education guidelines, and on your return, you may receive an Attendance letter.
- Please note that teachers will not be providing specific learning plans or work for individual students during family holidays.
Home Learning
At Spreydon School we do not set formal home learning. We encourage our students to be active outside school hours and our parents/caregivers to assist their children by:
- Encouraging reading for pleasure and information
- Listening and talking to them about things of interest
- Providing them with opportunities to help at home
- Encouraging and supporting them in their interests
Home & School
Our wonderful Spreydon PTA is a group of parents and family members who help fundraise for the school, organise fun events and help look out for people in our community who need a little extra support. Some fundraisers/events to look out for are our Bake Sales, Pizza Lunches and Raffles. The PTA meet twice each term and all are welcome to come bring their ideas and offer help when they can. Check the Calendar for dates and times of the next meetings. We would love to see you there! Email spreydonpta@gmail.com for more information.
House Groups
The school has four House Groups, Green, Red, Yellow, Blue. Each House Group has children of all ages, classes and year groups. Every child remains in their House Group for their entire time at Spreydon. (Siblings are kept in the same House Group, too). Whānau activities are held throughout the year and everyone (adults included) is encouraged to dress up in their House Group colours and support their House Group, especially at events like Cross Country or Sports days.
House Leaders/Ambassadors
Year 6 students are given the opportunity to be leaders within our school. These are chosen and announced at the end of year assembly for the following year. These students are given responsibilities and are looked up to by younger children.
I
ICT
Each Hub has a pool of iPads and/or Chromebooks for student use. These are all internet capable using a wireless internet connection. ICT is incorporated in all areas of the curriculum and at all levels of our school.
We also have large TV screens in each learning space for display purposes.
IEPs
An IEP is an Individual Education Plan. Children will have IEPs which are developed with parents, teachers and specialists when required.
Illness at School
The school does not have the resources or the facilities to care for children who are unwell. When children become unwell at school whanau will be phoned and asked to collect them. Please do not send children back to school before they are well enough to take a full part in the classroom programme.
K
Kapa Haka
We offer Kapa Haka to our students and have a performing group who represent our Kura. We are privileged to have a dedicated staff who create incredible opportunities for our tamariki in this space.
Kidscan
Spreydon School is lucky to be a Kidscan school. Kidscan provide us with our navy blue jackets, black school shoes and socks and snacks for tamariki that require a top up. All students are given a jacket when they start and are offered shoes. If your child grows out of any of these parents can call into the office and request new ones.
L
Lateness
Lateness is sometimes unavoidable, especially for those families who travel a long way to school but we ask that everyone makes a real effort to get their children to school on time. Every time a child arrives in the room late they disrupt not only their own learning but that of the rest of the class. All children who arrive after 9.00am must sign in at the office.
Library
We have a well stocked Library for students to enjoy a quiet read.
Lockdown
Once per year we do training to be prepared in case we have to go into lockdown. Should a lockdown occur we will be in contact via email, school apps. Once contacted, follow up communication will be on our website.
Lost Property
Each year the school collects an astonishing amount of lost property. This is kept in the foyer by the hall. From time to time items are displayed so that children can identify their property and reclaim it. At the end of every term unclaimed clothing is donated to charity. Parents can help reduce the problem by making certain that clothing is named.
Lunches
Tamariki are required to bring a packed lunch each day. We encourage a snack before Gobble & Go and lunch items to help sustain your child. We ask that a water bottle is brought each day. We do not encourage juice of fizzy drinks. We do try to limit waste. Tamariki will bring home wrappers etc in their lunchbox for disposal at home.
The school offers Sushi lunch each term & the PTA organises pizza lunch fundraisers each term.
M
Medicines, Illness or Accidents at School
At Spreydon School, we value the health (hauora) of our staff and students. Student medication is kept securely and taken appropriately – it must be signed in at the school office by whanau. Students must not keep medication in their school bag or in class and medication will not be administered without parental consent. Our office staff are first aid trained and all but the most minor of incidents are recorded.
If your child has any condition or health need, please make sure the office and their teacher are aware of it. If you are sick, stay home!
If a student has a contagious illness eg. Flu, Chicken Pox, measles, hand foot and mouth etc—please notify the school office as soon as you have confirmation of diagnosis.
Mihi Whakatau
Each term we hold a Mihi Whakatau to welcome new tamariki and their whanau to Spreydon School.
Money
Money is rarely needed at school so we discourage children from bringing any money to school unless it is absolutely necessary. If they must bring money they should give it to their teacher or hand it in to the office for safe keeping.
Music Lessons
We have itinerant teachers who offer guitar/drum/keyboard lessons at Spreydon School during school time. You can ask at the Office for the contact details to discuss cost and available times.
N
New Children
Where possible we like new children and teachers to meet before their first day. New Entrants begin school in groups (called Cohorts) so the whole group starts together. For New Entrant students the Homeroom teachers aim to visit their pre school before their start date so they are familiar with their teacher.
For older students, making time to meet their new teacher and gaining permission to ring their previous school sure the transition runs smoothly.
Newsletters
Most news comes out as it happens, via school apps and our Facebook page, but we also create a Newsletter that comes out each fortnight and learning teams at the start of each term.
O
Office Hours
The office is staffed between 8:30am and 3:30pm each day. If the phone is not answered please leave a message on the answerphone, and we will get back to you.
P
Parent App
Our Parent App is School Apps
Parent Involvement
Parent involvement is encouraged throughout the school.
Please let your child’s homeroom teacher when you are able to help. Regular volunteers will need to be police vetted.
Parking, Pick Up and Drop Off
Parking around the school is at a premium at the start and end of the school day. We are very lucky to have a drop off/pick up zone to help. Please do not park in this zone.
Our school has two entrances:
Our Hoon Hay entrance is patrolled with a Road Crossing. Walking, scooting or biking to school have many benefits. You might want to consider parking away from the school so you can walk part of the way with your children. As students get older, they should be able to walk themselves from a reasonable distance away from the school.
In the interests of safety, cars are NOT permitted to park in the Hoon Hay carpark (Even if the gate is open). It is our service entry point. We need to keep it clear and safe for our road patrol to operate safely.
Payments & Fees
Spreydon School does not charge fees for any essential curriculum activity. Optional and extra-curricular activities such as after school or weekend sports, Year 6 leavers tops or are optional so must be paid for.
Camps: There is a cost to parents for camps however school subsidises the cost and we will do our best to fundraise throughout the year to reduce it even further.
Sport: The cost of sporting activities varies depending on the sport and is set by the sporting body who oversees the competition. The teams we have depend on parent volunteers so may change. Fees are payable before the first game of the season. Sports tops will be provided for the season. Payments can be made at the school office or online.
Photos
Photos are a great way for us to share learning and fun at school. Parents give permission for photo use at the time of enrolment. If you do not wish photos of your child to be taken, please speak with the office and indicate it on your child’s enrolment form.
Policies
All school policies are online and fully searchable on SchoolDocs.

R
Reading Folders
Pupils in Junior classes will often bring home school Reading Folders containing reading material. Please make sure that the reading is heard and that the books, Home Learning and bags are returned to school.
Reporting to Parents
During the year teachers report to parents in a number of ways, often informally. You are welcome to contact your child’s teacher at any time to discuss your child’s progress.
Please be aware that teachers are busy and have many commitments outside classroom hours, so often the best method is to email the office via admin@spreydon.school.nz and the teacher can arrange a time to connect with you, either by phone or face to face. Formal reporting is done twice a year. A more detailed explanation of the reporting system is available from classroom teachers.
Road Patrol
The school has been granted permission to operate a Kea Crossing to assist children in crossing Hoon Hay Road before and after school. Senior students are trained as monitors but must operate under adult supervision at all times. We require parents to help keep the Road Patrol operational between 8.30 and 8.55 am, and 3 – 3.15pm each week day. Please advise the office if you can help.
Rubbish
Our students (and staff) are asked to bring as little rubbish as possible. Any rubbish from lunches or snacks brought from home, including yoghurt pots and chippie packets will be sent home. We encourage the use of reusable containers as much as possible.

Please contact the school office or your child’s teacher if you require support with this.
School Hours
Classrooms open for tamariki and whānau from 8.30am. Please note the school cannot accept responsibility for children on-site before 8.30 am.
- 9.00am Learning Time
- 10.40am – 11.00am Morning Tea – Gobble and Go
- 11.00am – 12.00pm Learning TIme
- 12.00pm – 12.30pm Kai Time
- 12.30pm – 1.30pm Learning Time
- 1.30pm – 1.50pm Push Play
- 1.50pm – 3.00pm Learning Time
Children should not get to school before 8.30am but before 9.00am
It is important that children arrive at school some time before class starts. This gives them a chance to get settled and catch up with their friends before class begins.
Teachers also often go over important information and talk about aspects of the day’s programme right at the start of class. Your child will miss this information if they are late.
School finishes at 3pm.
Please do not collect your child before 3pm unless you have to leave early for an appointment. If you are early for school pick up, rather than waiting right outside your child’s classroom, please wait by the Hall or by the seats around our school.
School Photos
These are taken once a year, in term 3. All children will have an individual and class photo taken. Group photos will also be taken. E.g. Choir, Kapa Haka, House Leaders etc.
Sibling/family photos are available on request.
Scooters at School
Scooters are very popular and we love seeing children riding them to or from school and enjoying them in the scooter areas at school. Children must wear a helmet while scootering. Scooter racks are provided. Parents, many scooters look very similar, so please ensure your child’s scooter is named and/or has some clearly identifying marks or stickers.
Skills to Share
If someone in your family has a special skill or passion, we would love for them to share with us. We are always looking for whānau to help with coaching teams, teaching new skills, sharing experiences and getting involved. If you know someone like this, ask them to get in touch.
Smoke Free
Please note that our entire school site (buildings and grounds) are smoke free and vape free at all times – both during and out of school hours.
Sports
If you like Sport, we usually have school teams for netball, miniball… and there are also community based clubs for rugby, football, Netball, league, softball, martial arts, tennis and more. Keep an eye on the newsletter, or ask at the office for what is coming up. While the school will organise these teams they are very much dependent on the involvement of parents as coaches and managers. Without parents we can’t field teams.
Staff Meetings
The whole staff is involved in staff meetings on Wednesday afternoons and in team planning meetings on Tuesday afternoons. Please keep this in mind when phoning or trying to make appointments. It is not always easy for teachers to free themselves.
Stationery
Stationery each year is able to be purchased from the school Office. This allows us to provide stationery packs at the best possible price.
Sunsmart
Our school value of Hauora – we remember to be Sun Smart in summer. Parents please apply sunscreen before school (we also have this available in our play areas) and remember to bring a sun hat every day in summer!
Sweets and Lollies
Please make sure that your child does not bring sweets, gum, fizzy or energy drinks to school.
Swimming
We are fortunate to undertake the Water safety programme at Pioneer Pool. These lessons are paid for by the school.
U
Uniform
Our School Uniform can be purchased from NZ Uniforms.
We do have a second hand stand in the Office Foyer. The Office also sells sunhat throughout the year.
Please look at our School uniform page on our website for details of our uniform expectations.
Jewellery is fully discouraged at school, mainly for reasons of safety. This includes such items as dangling earrings, necklaces, coloured fingernails, multi-bangles, etc. It is preferred that students do not wear these to school.
For health and safety reasons we also ask all students with long hair to have their hair tied back.
All children must wear either a navy blue bucket or wide brimmed hat in Term 1 & 2.
Shoes: Children are able to wear trainers or black closed toe shoes. No crocs, jandals or open toe shoes.
V
Valuables
The school cannot guarantee the security of valuable items children may bring to school. Please make sure that they do not bring along toys or jewellery or any precious item that could be lost or damaged.
Vision and Hearing Checks
There are regular hearing and vision visits to our school. If you are concerned about your child’s hearing or vision please let us know.
Visitors
All visitors to the school during the school day must report to the office as the first point of contact.
W
Water Only School
The school tries to encourage healthy eating habits and that includes drinking plenty of water. Water fountains are available and we encourage all children to bring a water bottle. Fizzy drinks, energy drinks and flavoured milk are not to be brought to school. Water is Brain Juice!
Z
Zoning
All children who live within the home zone described below shall be entitled to enrol at the Spreydon School.
Out of Zone Enrolments
Each year the board will determine the number of places that are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of children who live outside the home zone. The board will publish this information by notice in a community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received.
Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:
- First Priority will be given to students who have been accepted for enrolment in a special programme run by the school and approved by the Secretary for Education. (This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary).
- Second Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students.
- Third Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.
- Fourth priority will be given to applicants who are children of a former student.
- Fifth priority will be given to applicants who are children of employees of the school or children of a member of the Board of Trustees.
- Sixth priority will be given to any other applicants.
If there are more applicants than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.
Applicants seeking priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.
